Þakgil – South Iceland

In end of June 2013, 14 members of the Icelandic BMW Motorcycle Club went to Austfirðir (“Eastfjörds”). First we biked to Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the day after we took a trail to Blágil and then another one to Lakagígjar, which are on the way to Laki – our desired destination.

Due to difficult rivers to pass, we decided to return to Vík í Mýrdal and Þakgil – where some of us put up tents and others slept in small huts. In the evening we grilled togeather.

The day after, we went to Vík í Mýrdal, where we had a breakfast, before going back home to Reykjavík. Part of the group decided to make a tour to Hekla (the most famous volcano in Iceland). We biked so called Heklubraut (Hekla’s path), which starts at Gunnarsholt at Rangarvellir. From the roots of Hekla, we went to Búrfellsvirkjun, the power plant, and crossed the reservoir at Ísakot. Biked down the valley of Þjórsárdalur, through Laugavatn and Þingvellir, before going back to Reykjavík.
