Working People

The old part of George Town, which is on the Penang island in Malaysia is a UNESCO Heritage site. Beautiful, relaxing and charming city. One of the tourist attractions are wall decorations, which have been painted by some artists. These lively paintings, many of children, are popular sites for photos. When I was taking one, as thousands of other tourist, I suddenly decided to shift my focus.

I shot pictures and made a small project about the people working in small enterprises in the Pantai Street, located in the heritage area. These people are never exposed to the tourists but are a part of the tourist industry as they are producing or handling goods that are necessary to keep the whole system going.

The filming was quite demanding but very pleasant because it involved a close contact with so many. I think this video may become one of my favorites in future.

The song “Helo” (Beyonce Cover) is delivered by the Icelandic group Hjaltalin. It was recorded live on the Icelandic National Radio in 2013.

Today I have been away for four months, exactly. On that occasion, I want to dedicate this video project to all the “working people” at home, that have worked and supported me in various ways.
