The Moron Family

The story behind my visit to the Moron family in Peru goes back to November 2011 when Ásdís, my wife, and I were traveling in South America.

On our way to the see the Nazca lines, which is about 200 km (125 miles)south of Lima, I asked our guide if we could stop somewhere, to see the conditions of the people. He said it would be too dangerous to go into the neighborhoods. Traveling south of Chincha, our driver made a sudden turn into one of these neighborhoods. He stopped the car, opened the trunk and started to give away food and all kinds of sweets to the neighbours that surrounded us. He had bought the goods while we were having lunch.By doing this, we gave a clear signal that we only had positive intentions for our visit. The children were all smiling and enjoying the candy when an old man arrived. He started to tell us about the earthquake that destroyed about 40% of all the houses in Pisco and many in his neighbourhood. He asked us if we wanted to come to his house and take a look at the effects.

His generous invitation led me back to visit him and his family four years later.
