The Vegetable Boat

It is difficult to belief, that the only sensible gateway for motorcycles to enter Indonesia is with a vegetable boat that goes from Penang, Malaysia, to Belawan on Sumatra. No ferries, that take vehicles, go between Singapore and Indonesia. 700 km ride back to Penang from Singapore, was therefore inevitable.

The crew and the harbor workers maintain the good old way of loading and unloading – no containers or forklifts. It was fun to watch and I only could admire the men who were so fiscally fit and energetic in the hot and humid weather.

The crane operator lifted two motorcycles on board, one with an Icelandic number plate and the other with a spanish one.

Everyone knew their role and the captain, who watched everything from the ship’s bridge, never had to interfere. At the end, the crew washed and relaxed after a good working day.
