Þakgil – South Iceland

In end of June 2013, 14 members of the Icelandic BMW Motorcycle Club went to Austfirðir (“Eastfjörds”). First, we biked to Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the following day, we took a trail to Blágil and then another to Lakagígjar. Both of which are on the way to Laki, our final destination.

Because of the difficult river crossings, we decided to return to Vík í Mýrdal and Þakgil. We grilled together in the evening as some of us put up tents and others slept in small huts.

The day after, we went to Vík í Mýrdal, where we had breakfast before going back home to Reykjavík. Part of the group decided to make a tour to Hekla (the most famous volcano in Iceland). We biked the so-called Heklubraut (Hekla’s path), which starts at Gunnarsholt at Rangarvellir. From the roots of Hekla, we went to Búrfellsvirkjun, the power plant, and crossed the reservoir at Ísakot. We then biked down the valley of Þjórsárdalur, through Laugavatn and Þingvellir, before heading back to Reykjavík.
